On December 13th we put away our holiday shopping duties and took a little time to feast, share, and laugh. We met at Wendy’s II for some traditional holiday . . . Vietnamese food. Perhaps, it wasn’t traditional, but
the Pad Thai was the best I’ve ever eaten. Rotary #8 took over four eight-person tables in the banquet area. We had originally made reservations for only twenty people, but Wendy Au graciously accommodated us. Mike Jones Past President and member of the Tacoma Actors Guild Board of Directors put the fun outing together.
After eating, talking and laughing for over two hours we left for TAG’s production of Forbidden Xmas, which pokes fun and Tacoma and Seattle holiday institutions. More Rotarians and guests joined us there. It was wonderful. At our November 20th meeting writer and composer Richard Gray came and talked about the production and even sang the Gallopin’ Gertie song, but it was nothing compared to the actual presentation with the entire cast. While he was at Rotary he was asked to sing Farmer Tan from Pump Boys and the Dinettes (this was produced a good eight years ago), which he did. In the five person cast of Forbidden Xmas were two of the original cast members of Pump Boys. It’s a very small cultural world here in Tacoma.
To help those who have birthdays in December and find themselves gift and celebration challenged, the cast did a skit for December Birthdays. Jeff Rounce was assisted onto the stage at TAG to celebrate his December 21st birthday. I don’t know how the cast knew to choose him . . .
It was fun laughing at Jeff and Tacoma via the TAG production of Forbidden Xmas. And it was really fun visiting and eating at Wendy's II Vietnamese Restaurant. We were there over two hours, but could have easily spent much more time there. A second bottle of beer and I could have spent the night.
We’ll have to do it again next year.
