Debbie Wooten performing.Listening to Debbie speak was very touching and inspirational. I was most greatly impacted when she talked about wanting to grow up to be like her friend’s mother. Because of her friend’s mother’s actions, Debbie was able to overcome three generations of depressed, alcoholic, women. She reminded me how my actions impact and influence others and I will be more mindful of how I behave.

I thought Debbie Wooten was great, she was full of excitment and joy. It was amazing to hear her stories of adversity beginning as a baby to adulthood. From polio, being African American, wanting to be treated equaly and living as she wanted to live and derserved. From her finding out that she was black instead of just being polio was funny but showed how her whole life had been about her being different.

Wow. Debbie Wooten was amazing! She was so funny, making everyone in the audience laugh almost the entire time while still getting across the story of her life. I love how she said that “none of us are prejudiced when we’re born” and it was so interesting to hear that she had gone through a few years of school before she even saw that there were people around her that were a different color than herself. I thought that it was great that she had just thought of these girls as her friends, not even noticing their color until it was brought to her attention. I also loved the stories she shared about the kids in her “special” school. Debbie Wooten overcoming a hurdle. The ones with attitude. “It’s all about attitude”, she kept telling us, and she’s right. Our attitude towards things shapes who we are and how we feel. The sentence that stuck out to me the most was “Self-esteem is the most precious commodity.” Self-esteem is so important and most of us have so little of it. Debbie was incredibly inspiring and her words were heartfelt. I’m so glad she came to talk to us and I’m very glad I got the opporotunity to hear her.

Her message was so touching, i was teary eyed through it, I identified with her so much and I am a normally skinny white woman! Talk about cultural diversity appreciation. Her message about having life changing power to influence others, was so simple yet so profound. She was cheerful, friendly and touchable. I really enjoyed her humor and candid memories of her childhood, and how even through the darkness she went through as a child she overcame. She went through Polio, having an alchoholic mother and being overweight, she triumphed and didnt use her issues as a crutch! She used them to propel her into a life of serving and giving to others.

Though there were several lessons I took away from watching Debbie Wooten’s speech (I recorded her off of channel 26 and viewed it yesterday) the most important I found was the creativity she applied to so many situations. The example of anatomically correct cabbage patch dolls I found intriguing and the example of outwitting her kids instead of using force got me to think. Debbie is a remarkable woman from what I perceived from her speech. Debbie Wooten as a cowboy.Honestly, I’ve always made the generalization that anyone who relies on help from the state in the form of welfare will become dependent on it. This is mostly due to the people I have met who have abused the system, but her life with so many downs has ultimately ended up with the help and the stepping stone that helped her become a successful woman, and a model for all women to follow. Her creativity to turn a bad situation around in her own way is what sets her apart. This idea of turning the situation around, I will use in my attempt to get my 6th grade basketball team back on track and wanting to learn rather than having fun. I will outwit them just like Debbie would do.

Debbie Wooten was great and extremely funny. Debbie spoke about many things that have to deal with overcoming adversity, struggles, and life situations. Debbie used her own life as an example of how attitude has gotten her to where she is today, “depending on your physical body will not get you through life, its attitude.”
